Justin Dello Joio (JDJ), born in New York City, is the seventh generation of composers in the Dello Joio family. A recording of JDJ's  concerto for piano and orchestra, Oceans Apart, was just released by Bridge Records (BRIDGE 9583), along with Due Per Due, for cello and piano, and Blue and Gold Music, for brass quintet and organ. The CD's namesake, Oceans Apart, was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra for Garrick Ohlsson and recorded at its world premiere in January 2023 at Symphony Hall in Boston. Due Per Due (2 for 2) was commissioned and premiered by NY Philharmonic Principal Cellist Carter Brey, at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. The third piece on his new album is his celebratory work Blue and Gold Music, commissioned for the American Brass Quintet and Organ on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of The Trinity School in New York; it premiered and was later recorded at New York's Riverside Church with organist Colin Fowler.

Bridge Records has also released an acclaimed CD (BRIDGE  9220) of several other of his works, with pianist Garrick Ohlsson performing his Sonata for Piano and Two Concert Etudes, as well as Music for Piano Trio "The March of Folly", performed by Ani Kavafian, violin, Carter Brey, cello, and Jeremy Denk, piano. 

Dello Joio, currently published by Theodore Presser Co. and G. Schirmer, and EB Marks has composed orchestral, chamber, vocal, opera, and solo works, as well as music for chamber orchestra, and his work has been heard in the US, Europe, Taiwan and Korea. He has been the recipient of numerous awards: four from The American Academy of Arts and Letters, including their Thompson Award for Vocal Music, The American Academy Award in Music, The Lakond Award, and the Charles Ives Scholarship. He has received a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, The 2016 American Prize for chamber music, and for opera, The Ettelson Chamber Music Award. He has received grants from National Endowment for the Arts, NY State Council on the Arts, Aaron Copland Recording Foundation, NY Foundation for the Arts, 2 Meet the Composer grants, The American Music Center CAPS award, and the Theodore Presser Foundation. The Classical Recording Foundation has also awarded him their Composer of the Year Award at a ceremony at Carnegie Hall.

Dello Joio started to study piano at age 5 with Constance Keene and Mieczeslav Munz, and began composing at age 6, winning a scholarship to the Juilliard Pre College program at age 7. At age 12, he began studying with composer Ellen Taafe Zwilich and in high school, with composer Hall Overton and jazz pianist Roland Hanna. He completed his formal training studying with Vincent Persichetti, Roger Sessions, and David Diamond at The Juilliard School, where he received a composition award while completing his B.M., M.M., and D.M.A. degrees.

Mr. Dello Joio resides in New York City with his wife Marianne Bachmann and their daughter, writer Chiara Dello Joio. He teaches at The Juilliard School and is Faculty Composer in Residence at New York University.
